During my daily morning walks, I noticed an odd bunch of cherry trees in blossom tucked between deep dark green pine trees. This morning, 16 April, I had some time to spare, so I decided to take a closer look at the cherry blossoms. As I approached the trees I noticed that the thin cement road zig-zag higher up the mountainside. While looking at the beautiful light pinkish flowers I slowly made my way up the mountain. When I stumbled upon, Guemyangjeongsa House, the tangible cultural heritage of Gyeongsangbuk-do No. 388.
Gueumyangjeongsa House is where Hwang Jun-Ryang, 1517-1563, a Confucian scholar and one of the most brilliant disciples of Yi Hwang, used to study and teach young people. Yi Hwang even went as far as to write records about the life of Hwang when he passed away. Hwang passed the state examination for the recruitment of high-ranking officials in 1540, served as an official at Seonggyungwan National Academy, Ministry of Finance, and as the mayor of Seongju. He aided in the compilation of the "True Records of Kings Jungjong and Injong".
The fireplace for the ondol.
The building consists of an ondol-heated room, a large wooden floor, and a floor consisting of strips of wood in front of the house. Its plain composition displays the characteristic of older traditional Korean architecture and the architectural features favoured by the noble families of that time. Let's take a look around the house and its surroundings.
